Apple Brown Betty

(Personally Tested by the Prudent Cook)

  • 1/2 c. margarine, softened
  • 1/2 c. rolled oats
  • 1/2 c. flour
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. baking soda (packed)
  • 2 tsp. cinnamon*
  • 1/4 c. water
  • 4 c. apples, peeled and sliced

Preheat oven to 375°F. Combine brown sugar, oats, cinnamon, flour and margarine; stir with a fork until well-mixed and crumbly. Add 1/3 of apples and 1/3 of crumb mixture to a greased 1-1/2 quart baking dish. Repeat until all apples and crumb mixture are added. Pour water over the mixture. Bake for 30 minutes.

Serves well with vanilla ice cream.

*Original recipe called for the following, which I did not have on hand when I made this recipe:

  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

This is my variation of a traditional Maine recipe.
