About the Quotes

Sprinkled throughout the Prudent Cook website are various quotations.

In one way or another, they pertain to cooking, keeping house, or other homemaking skills and activities.

Basically, I just love quotes, like I love cooking, and wanted to share that on this site, too.

About the Logo

In reference to the photo in the top left-hand corner of every webpage:

This woman's photo was taken in the 1800's, and I fell in love with it. She looks strong, compassionate, capable, open to learning, resourceful, competent, unafraid to meet life's challenges, and also loving to her family and mankind.

These are all strengths I hope to grow, too.

About the Prudent Cook

"What kind of name is that for a website?"

It is a tongue-in-cheek kind of name that embodies everything I hope to be someday:

  1. a good cook
  2. who uses her resources wisely
  3. while satisfying the needs of her family.

Learning to Cook Again

In my younger years I was a pretty good cook, most well known for my skills in baking. Due to a series of illnesses and years recovering from strokes, I got out of practice.

(Okay, I'll confess - for years, I was told not to cook due to my propensity for kitchen fires and culinary disasters. In 2005, I only had two very small kitchen fires, which makes it a good year for me.)

Now I have regained many lost skills and even returned to the work force but one talent still needed improvement - cooking.

The beginnings of the collection.

First, I started looking for recipes that were easy to follow - complex directions only increased the likelihood of failure. Then, with practice, I began dabbling with more complicated dishes. That is why you will find many difficulty levels within these recipes.

I added recipes to my collection that called for a limited number of ingredients. Then I began to branch out and try dishes that called for something extra, especially for holidays and other special occasions.

Putting everything together in one place.

As of the creation of this site in 2005, I am not a gourmet chef but I hold my own in the kitchen. I have gathered my recipes, collected on the backs of envelopes, post-its, and various text files in my computer and compiled them into this resource.

In addition, I have indulged my curiosity about food with the beginnings of the Food Encyclopedia. I love to learn new things, and researching information on the internet comes easily to me. It's only natural that this section was created.

It's true. The internet is the world's largest cookbook. However, I don't need the largest collection of recipes in the world - only the ones that fit my needs.

If you also find this site useful or interesting, that's the icing on the cake.

"Hi, thanks for visiting."

Kathie Dawn, the Prudent Cook

"Basically, I am an Adventurer in Life and love to learn new things everyday."

A little about myself.

Ask someone who they are and usually they will answer with one more titles or labels. Mine tend to run in this direction:

"I am an artist, a writer, and a webmaster. I have worked in several fields including medical and legal, government and engineering, and for nonprofit organizations. I am talented in communication, computers, marketing and organizational skills. I've had a couple gallery showings and love to share my artwork."

I'm like a rolling stone.

I tend to be on the move, although I've been settling down a little more with each passing year.

I was born into a large family and we often moved around when my dad was in the Army. As an adult, I have continued the tradition of moving around constantly. This pattern has been somewhat broken by spending five years in one city - Seattle, Washington. My partner and I have purchased a house in Arkansas, and soon we'll be moving there.

So it looks like I'm about to hit the road again, but once I reach the next stop, I plan to stick around there for awhile.
