Mission Statement:

The Prudent Cook is a personal website for storing recipes I want to keep, as well as those I want to try in the future. It is a repository of information that can be accessed no matter where I go, and an efficient way to organize the bits of useful knowledge I find here and there.

How recipes are selected:

  • they must be inexpensive,
  • they must be easy to make, and
  • they must taste good.

Personally Tested recipes:

There's no sense making a recipe if it doesn't taste good. Recipes with the heading "Personally Tested by the Prudent Cook" are ones I've already tried. If it isn't worth making twice, it won't be on this site.

Exceptions to the Rules:
  • recipes for holiday and special occasions,
  • recipes for seasonal or ethnic foods,
  • recipes that look interesting that I might try one day, and
  • recipes for dishes I tasted somewhere and hope to learn myself.
You never know what you will find here!

Cooking Quotes

"The ordinary acts we practice every day at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest."

Thomas Moore

Prudent cooks season their meals with love.

"...cooking done with care is an act of love."

Craig Claiborne

"The secret of good cooking is first, having a love of it. . . . If you're convinced cooking is drudgery, you're never going to be good at it, and you might as well warm up something frozen."

James Beard

"Men like to barbecue. Men will cook if danger is involved."

John Wayne

"Non cooks think it's silly to invest two hours' work in two minutes' enjoyment; but if cooking is evanescent, well, so is the ballet."

Julia Child

"The fact is that it takes more than ingredients and technique to cook a good meal. A good cook puts something of himself into the preparation - he cooks with enjoyment, anticipation, spontaneity, and he is willing to experiment."

Pearl Bailey
